Kamschatka was built by Revolutionary War General
James Chestnut in 1854. The home was designed by
noted South Carolina Architect Robert Mills. The
property includes 15 acres, pool, tennis courts,
guest cottage, 6 rental cottages, barn, paddocks,
landscaped grounds and a 10,000 sq. ft. manor.
This property is located in the City Limits of
Camden, South Carolina, which is the home of the
Carolina Cup Steeplechase in the spring and the
Colonial Cup Steeplechase in the fall.
The three story manor is constructed almost
entirely of heart pine - a rare, almost
imperishable building material that is unlikely
to
ever be used again. The home is entered under a
bannister porch at the second level. The ground
level, originally a stable area, accommodates a
spacious kitchen, wine cellar, sunroom, library,
two baths, and a guestroom. A lovely wrought
iron
staircase leads to a spacious center hall on the
main level. Intricate woodwork, french doors and
a magnificient stairway present an air of
understated elegance. Two parlors with original
fireplaces are located on this level along with a
garden room and spacous master bedroom suite.
There are five family rooms on the third floor,
for a total of 8 bedrooms and 8.5 baths.
